Dos and Don'ts for Naturally Glowing Skin

The first signs of a beautiful skin are - soft, smooth and glowing. To get a flawless skin, here are a couple of skin care dos and don'ts to follow.

Dos
  • Wear makeup with the most natural ingredients possible. Mineral makeup provides flawless coverage while allowing your skin to breathe. Fewer ingredients often means the makeup's better for your skin.
  • Exfoliate regularly. Once a week works for most. If you have oily or combination skin, use a chemical exfoliator like glycolic or salicylic acid. Those with normal or sensitive skin will reap the greatest benefit with a microdermabrasion formula exfoliator -- the kind with little beads that scrub your face.
  • Use eye cream every day! The skin around your eyes is very thin and fragile. Protect it with an SPF 30 eye cream.
  • Eat and drink healthful foods. Great skin starts on the inside. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated, and ingest lots of antioxidants like those found in green tea and foods high in vitamins A, E, C and beta carotene. Antioxidants fight free radicals, which can cause cell damage. (Bonus: Antioxidants also help protect against cancers and heart disease!)
  • Follow a regimen regularly. Caring for your skin should be a twice-daily occurrence. Don't be slapdash about your regimen or follow it only sporadically and expect to see any lasting results.
Dont's
  • Smoking prematurely ages your skin at a rate second only to sun damage. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, blocking the flow of oxygen to your skin.
  • Forget to wear sunscreen! Make your moisturizer do double duty and wear one with an SPF of at least 30, even in the winter, and even if you are only outdoors a few minutes a day.
  • Forget your neck, chest and hands. These areas age the fastest and are all but ignored in our skincare routines. Sunscreen, exfoliation and moisturization are just as important in these areas as they are on your face. Look for anti-aging ingredients like vitamin A, kinetin, copper and vitamin C.
  • Overdry your skin. Many women make the mistake of staging a full-scale drying assault on their entire faces when confronted with a pimple. This only makes the problem worse. When skin is stripped of all its natural oils, it produces even more sebum to make up for it. This substance is what clogs pores, causing pimples. A gentle cleanser and regular exfoliation is kind to your skin, yet effective enough for most women -- but do see your dermatologist if you feel you have an acne problem.

Three Tips To Make Your Life Safer

Here are three tips that mostly pertain to protecting you or your loved ones from an assault. That assault can take place almost anywhere but as it turns out, there are a few places that are the most dangerous: parking lots, home and the workplace.

Nearly everyone has heard of accidents happening because of impaired or distracted drivers. We used to think that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was dangerous and it still is. But what is even more so are people who drive and talk on the phone or worse text on their cell phones. All it takes is a split second for you to become involved in an accident-far longer than it takes to text one word.

What is even more amazing to me is people who have accidents while walking and texting on their cell phones. Maybe you've seen the video of a lady who was carrying her child and talking on her cell phone in a subway station then actually stumbling onto the train tracks-duh. Or how about the video of the man texting on his cell phone while walking down the street and walking straight into a busy intersection?

1. That would be the number one tip-pay attention to what you're doing no matter where you are. If you're distracted, criminals actually prey on those who are distracted. Women who are pushing a grocery cart or a cart filled with anything out of the mall or store are easily distracted by a small child that may be with them or a call on a cell phone. Your life is too valuable to be a target for a criminal who looks for those kinds of distractions.

2. Avoid, if you can, darkened or poorly lit areas such as stairwells at work or in an apartment complex. Parking lots that aren't well-lit also make for dangerous areas especially for women.

3. Always carry some kind of self-defense product with you. Several are available that can attach to your keychain such as pepper spray or even a new 5,000,000 volt stun device. A self-defense product can provide valuable time for you to get away and seek help should you be assaulted anywhere, even at home in a domestic violence situation.

If you follow these three tips you will be way ahead of the game. And here's one more as a bonus: use your common sense. Women, especially, have this built-in radar that senses dangerous situations. Pay attention to it.

How to Get Rid of Facial Hair

There are many ways of removing facial hair. The method should be chosen according to quantity or thickness, location and rate of growth. Read on to find out more

Temporary methods of facial hair removal

Plucking
This method involves the use of tweezers and removes hair from the follicles. Therefore, re-growth takes time. Plucking is suitable for stray hairs on the chin, between and under the brows. It should not be used for hair on the upper lip. The area should be first wiped with cotton wool, soaked in a mild antiseptic solution. One should also take care not to pluck out hair from a mole, before consulting a doctor.

Threading
It's the most common method of removing facial hair. The disadvantage is that the effect is temporary and the procedure has to be repeated periodically. It is useful for areas like the upper lip and the eyebrows. In fact, threading is done to shape the eyebrows. Frequent
threading can cause skin irritations. On sensitive skins, there can be redness or a rash. Avoid threading on areas with eruptions, like pimples or acne. A zinc ointment or ice can be applied to soothe the skin.

Waxing
Many beauty salons offer "katori" waxing for facial hair. Cold wax would be safer for the face. Waxing strips are available. However, large areas of the face should not be waxed. It would be good for smaller areas like the chin, area above the lips or sideburns. For excessive facial hair, many women use a combination of methods, like threading chin and area above lips and bleaching the rest of the face. Or, threading chin and upper lip and waxing sideburns.

Epilation
An epilator is a small gadget for hair removal. Epilators for facial hair are different from the ones for body hair. The effect lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks. Epilators pull out the hair by the roots. It is said that the smallest hair can be removed with an epilator. There is
some initial pain, which may decrease gradually.

Electrolysis
Although this is said to be a permanent method of hair removal, re-growth can occur. In electrolysis, the diathermy method was common. It involves the use of fine needles, through which an electric current is passed. But now a new procedure is being used, known as transdermal electrolysis, in which needles are not used. Also, superfluous hair
can be removed from larger areas.

In the earlier method, needles were introduced into the hair follicle to cauterise the hair root. This checked re-growth. It is extremely important to make inquiries, as scarring can occur in the hands of an unskilled operator.

Laser
This is the latest method of permanent removal of facial hair. Laser produces an intense beam of light, which is absorbed by the hair follicles. The laser disables the hair follicle's ability to produce hair. Cooling devices are used to prevent damage to the rest of the skin. The advantage of laser over electrolysis is that the laser light can scan broader areas. Therefore, fewer sessions are required. However, it is more expensive than electrolysis. Re-growth occurs in some cases, but is slower and scantier. It is very important to find a good laser clinic. The temporary known side effects are redness, swelling and itching. The main risk in laser treatment is the possibility of skin burns. So, before choosing the clinic, it is essential to find out its reputation, by making inquiries and talking to people who have been through the treatment.

Home remedies
For very fine hair, scrubs and exfoliation can help. This would discourage hair growth over a period of time, if used regularly. Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it in the direction of hair growth. Wash off when it dries. Apply it once or twice a week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk and rub this on the skin with a circular motion. It is said to discourage facial hair, but it may leave a yellowish tinge on the skin.
